SENIOR BULLETIN
MARCH 5, 2010
CONFUSION ABOUT TOPS APPLICATION
There appears to be some misinformation going around among seniors about applying for TOPS. You can apply for TOPS in two ways. The preferred method is to fill out only the FAFSA. LOSFA (Louisiana Office of Student Financial Assistance), which administers TOPS encourages seniors to use the FAFSA because it will allow you to apply for TOPS and the federal grants, loans and work-study programs. The second way to apply for TOPS is to fill out the TOPS application at the LOFSA website (www.osfa.la.gov). You will have to verify that you are ineligible for federal grants and loans. Please understand that if you use this application, you may risk losing TOPS. According to LOSFA, if the state legislature decides to reduce TOPS in any way, the students who fill out the TOPS application on the LOSFA website will be the first group to lose TOPS. So, if you are applying for TOPS, you are advised to fill out the FAFSA. Under no circumstance do you have to fill out both forms (FAFSA & TOPS application at the LOSFA website).

COLLEGE APPLICATION PROCESS
Some seniors have already inquired about the procedure for sending off college applications and transcripts. The process is very simple. If you are applying to a public college in the state of Louisiana, you can apply online, pay your application fee online or mail it in. You do NOT have to ask the counselor to mail a copy of your transcript because all of the public colleges have access to your transcripts online. If you are applying out-of-state or to a private college in Louisiana, you may complete the application online or use a paper version.. If you use a paper application, put the completed application in a stamped (2 stamps for legal envelopes, 3 stamps for large brown envelopes) addressed envelope and take it to your counselor. He/she will print your “Official Transcript” and mail it for you. If you apply online, fill out a transcript request form and give it to your counselor.
LOUISIANA ACADEMIC ENDORSEMENT CANDIDATES
To be eligible for the Academic Endorsement, seniors must have followed the TOPS curriculum, have the TOPS GPA (2.5 in core) and a 23 ACT. They must also have scored the GEE with Basic or above OR 1 Approaching Basic, I Mastery or Advanced, & Basic OR 2 Approaching Basic with 2 Mastery or above.

Remember the FAFSA is required for all federal grants, loans, work-study, and the LA TOPS scholarship.

COLLEGE APPLICATIONS
Summer is a great time to start narrowing down your list of post-secondary school options and applying to college or other post-secondary schools. Remember to apply to your dream school, and back-up school, and a couple in between. Be sure to use the website, www.laeportal.com to assist you with your research. There is information about careers, colleges and technical schools, test prep, financial aid, diploma requirements and lots more. You no longer need your user name and password to do research on the LAePortal. That is only needed to update your five year plan.
Use one application to apply to several colleges. Many of them are private, out-of-state colleges. You can apply online at www.commonapp.org.
COLLEGE APPLICATION PROCESS
The process is very simple. If you are applying to a public college in the state of Louisiana, you can apply online, pay your application fee online or mail it in. You do NOT have to ask us to mail a copy of your transcript because all of the public colleges have access to your transcripts online. If you are applying out-of-state or to a private college in Louisiana, you may complete the application online or use a paper version.. If you use a paper application, put the completed application in a stamped (2 stamps for legal envelopes, 3 stamps for large brown envelopes) addressed envelope and take it to your counselor for assistance.
APPLYING FOR FINANCIAL AID
The Federal Student Aid program just informed us that the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) will be available in three ways. Apply online a www.fafsa.ed.gov., download complete and mail a PDF version of the FAFSA at www.FederalStudentAid.ed.gov., or request a paper FAFSA by calling the Federal Student Aid Information Center at 1-800-443-3243 or 1-319-337-5665. The counseling office will NOT have FAFSA forms available. Remember the FAFSA is required for all federal grants, loans, work-study, and the LA TOPS scholarship.
CSS PROFILE
If you are applying to a private or out-of-state college and you plan to apply for financial aid, you may need to file the CSS/Financial Aid Profile. Check with the college to see if it is required. You can go online to www.collegeboard.com to register.
SELECTIVE SERVICE
Guys are reminded that you must register with the Selective Service within 30 days of your 18th birthday. The easiest way to register is to go online to www.sss.gov .
